What this video covers

If you wake up at 3 AM to use the bathroom, what you drink in the evening, and when, matters. Your kidneys work a night shift: a hormone rises in the evening and tells them to make less urine. In this video, a nurse counts down six kind evening drinks and three to avoid at night, for anyone over 60 who is up during the night.

You will hear what the evidence really shows for cranberry, chamomile and hibiscus tea; lemon water for kidney stones, and the dose that was actually studied; and warm unsweetened plant milk, including what to check on the carton. Nurse Ade explains why drinking more water does not protect your kidneys, and when to drink it. The three to avoid at night are caffeine, alcohol and coconut water, and the biggest lever is not a drink at all: the salt at dinner. A safety note: if you have kidney disease, some of these drinks may be wrong for you. Coconut water is very high in potassium, so ask first if you have kidney disease or take spironolactone, or a tablet ending in -pril or -sartan. Getting up more than twice a night can be a sign of something that needs checking, including your heart, prostate or blood sugar.
